The music of Johann Sebastian Bach is intimately linked to the Lutheran chorale. These simple and popular hymns have since inspired countless composers, even those working in the realm of secular music where the roots of many of these melodies may be traced. Chorale melodies are ubiquitous in the sacred works of Bach. His contemporaries instantly recognized the chorales they had sung since childhood; when the melodies were played on instruments, the words were still fresh in their memories and gave meaning to the music.
