A neglected area until quite recently, the industrialisation of construction during the 20th century has become a hot topic among architectural historians in recent years. This volume, published in connection with the project entitled A Critical Encyclopedia for the Restoration and Re-use of 20th-century Architecture, explores the different facets of the industrialisation experience and its architectural, technical and political dimensions through contributions from around twenty international scholars, architects, and historians. Not content merely to retrace its historical development it attempts to take stock - by means of case studies -, of the problems we face in conserving industrialised and prefabricated architecture today. By exploring the linkages between the heritage of the recent past and contemporary architectural activity, the authors reveal that intervention in existing fabric represents a vital moment in the reawakening of architecture as a discipline..
