Les relevés de l'écriture polyphonique et contrapunctique de B. Mehldau présentés dans cet ouvrage participent d'une tentative plus ambitieuse, celle de constituer un patrimoine écrit de la musique improvisée en général et du jazz en particulier. Des passerelles entre les genres, couvrant deux univers distincts, la musique classique et le jazz, sont ainsi proposés.
